Has been tentatively derived from Proto-Indo-European *ke(n)h₁- (“to dig”) (whence Proto-Indo-Iranian *kanH- (“to dig, destroy”)); if so, then the sense development could have been something like \"hoof (a digging limb)\" > \"animal leg\" > \"(human) leg\".
